First established in 1968, the Institute of Builders Merchants has been around for longer than most of its members have been in business. Then, as now, your Institute exists to recognise the professional skills and competences of the merchant trade. Categories of Institute Membership
Student Member: Student membership of the Institute is especially suitable for individuals who are starting out on their merchanting career. Success at one of the industry’s Intermediate Apprenticeship schemes (NVQ or SVQ level 2) or successful completion of two Product Knowledge syllabuses on BMF Campus is normally sufficient for admission to the Student category of membership.
Associate Member: Advancement to Associate Level is normally upon completion of an Advanced Apprenticeship qualification (NVQ / SVQ Level 3 equivalent), and a suitable length of service in a position of management responsibility. Associate Members of the Institute are entitled to use the designatory letters AIBM after their names.
Full Member: To be a full Member of the Institute of Builders Merchants normally requires a minimum of five years’ experience at management level, plus successful completion of an appropriate management qualification, such as the BMF Diploma In Merchanting. Upon acceptance as a Member, the designatory letters MIBM may be used.
Fellow: Fellowship of the Institute is an honour bestowed by the Governors upon members who have made an exceptional contribution to the life and success of the Institute of Builders Merchants. Fellows of the Institute of Builders Merchants display the initials FIBM after their names.
Hon. Life Member: Individuals whose support and advice has been of exceptional value to the Institute may be selected by the Governors for an honorary membership of the Institute for life. This rarely-awarded category of Institute membership may be awarded to Members or non-Members of the Institute.
