December 2010 Update 2 – AGM 2011

Institute of Builders Merchants 42nd AGM On March 8th, 2011, At Derby College

The Institute of Builders Merchants invites you to attend its 42nd AGM on March 8th, 2011 at The Johnson Building in Derby College.

In addition to the AGM, attendees will have the opportunity to visit “The Roundhouse Building” as well as view participants competing in the Institute’s ‘Practical Building Skills Challenge Event’.

The Roundhouse, built originally in 1827, was the world’s oldest steam locomotive workshop accommodating up to 32 engines and a central turntable for moving the engines around. The multi million pound refurbishment and restoration of the Grade 2 listed building used the William Morris principle of ‘honest repair’, maintaining the overall character and features of the building to English Heritage standards. During the re-construction, the project became a ‘living classroom’ giving Derby college students work experience opportunities to learn both valuable restoration skills and modern construction techniques. The Roundhouse has been described as an “exemplar project” by English Heritage in its ‘Constructive Conservation in Practice’. It has also received many national and local awards including the prestigious accolade by The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

The aim of the Institute’s Practical Building Skills Challenge Event is for the teams to work with the products we sell in a fun and hands on way. In our experience, this not only enhances their product knowledge but enables them to better advise customers on how to use and work with the products too.

The programme for the AGM is as follows:

12.30 – 13.30 Buffet Lunch
14.00 AGM
14.45 Tea/coffee
15.00 Roundhouse Tour
16.00 Join Practical Building Skills Event prize giving
